GEORGETOWN, Guyana -- Police in the South American country of Guyana say they have detained a man suspected of killing two of his young children with a machete and critically injuring a third.

Police said in a statement Wednesday that they captured 34-year-old John Blanchard as he was about to try to hang himself. They said the street food vendor told police he was depressed his wife had left home to work as a cook in a remote gold mining camp.

Police said 4-year-old Daniel Blanchard and 10-year-old Belika Blanchard were found dead in their beds. They said neighbors took 6-year-old Joy Blanchard to the hospital late Tuesday.

Authorities said they expect to charge John Blanchard with murder.
