GUATEMALA CITY – Guatemala is trying to set a Guinness world record for the most motorcyclists participating in a caravan, hoping to draw more than 20,000 bikes for an annual trek 223 kilometers (134 miles) from the capital.
The Zorro Caravan event was started by Ruben Villadeleon 54 years ago and is a religious pilgrimage to the Basilica of the Black Christ in the city of Esquipulas. The city was the site of peace talks for Central American wars in the 1980s.
Guatemalan President Otto Perez and Interior Secretary Mauricio Lopez Bonilla raised the starting flag Saturday atop their own Harley Davidsons.
A Guinness official set up a count at kilometer 12.9 (mile 8) to record all the participants.
