Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman says the German leader faces several more weeks on crutches after cracking her pelvis in a skiing accident — though she's now ready to return to a fuller working schedule.

Merkel has limited herself lately to a handful of public appearances, largely at Cabinet meetings, after doctors told her to rest for three weeks following her accident while cross-country skiing in Switzerland.

Spokesman Steffen Seibert said Friday that although the three weeks are nearly up a full recovery "requires patience above all." He told reporters that Merkel is now resuming a more normal schedule but they "will continue to see the chancellor using her crutches for several more weeks."

He says Merkel will give two planned speeches next week sitting rather than standing.
