THE HAGUE, Netherlands – A former Congo vice president, Jean-Pierre Bemba, has appeared in court on charges of conspiring with his lawyer and others to present false evidence in his ongoing trial on charges including murder, rape and pillaging in Central African Republic.

Bemba was in court Wednesday with his lawyer, Aime Kilolo, and Fidele Babala, a member of Bemba's political group, to confirm their identities and that they understand the charges. None had to enter pleas.

Bemba told Judge Cuno Tarfusser, "as far as I am concerned, I have acted in good faith."

Two other suspects, a witness in Bemba's trial and his legal case manager, have been arrested but not yet transferred to The Hague.

Bemba served as one of Congo's four vice presidents between 2003 and 2006.
