CAIRO – Activists at an Egyptian rights group that aids the survivors of torture and abuse, including sexual violence, say the government's plan to shut the center down will not stop them from documenting torture committed by security forces.
Aida Seif el-Dawla, a psychiatrist and co-founder of El Nadeem Center for Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence, said in a Sunday press conference that authorities have told them the center will be officially sealed on Monday.
Suzan Fayyad, a psychiatrist at El Nadeem, said officials had initially tried to close the center last Wednesday, but agreed to not enforce their orders until Monday morning to give the center time to contest the order.
Rights groups have criticized the threatened closure, saying it is part of a sweeping crackdown on their work.
