SRINAGAR, India – Separatists are calling for a strike across the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir, where India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi is due to lead a campaign rally for local elections.

The region is on high alert with snipers on rooftops, road barricades and sniffer dogs near campaign rally venues in the main city of Srinagar. Authorities imposed a daytime curfew on parts of Srinagar.

Officials say they are taking no risks with Modi arriving Monday before a third day of voting is held Tuesday to elect a regional legislature. The elections are being held in five stages, with the results on Dec. 23.

Anti-India sentiment runs deep in the mostly Muslim region, where rebel groups have been fighting against Indian rule since 1989.
