SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina – Bosnia has released a former mujahedeen fighter from Syria after detaning him for more than seven years as a threat to national security.
Imad al-Husin's family said he was released Thursday from an immigration center where he had been held without charge and allowed to return to his Bosnian wife and children in their Sarajevo home.
Al-Husin has lived in Bosnia for decades and was among the foreign fighters who joined the mainly Muslim government army during the country's 1992-95 interethnic war. He became a naturalized citizen, but was stripped of his Bosnian nationality following the Sept. 11 attacks.
Human rights groups have over the years repeatedly protested his treatment.
The European Court of Human Rights in 2012 required Bosnia to charge him, release him or find a safe third country in which to resettle him.
