Authorities in El Salvador say the body of a missing mayor has been found after an intense search.

The attorney general's office identified the victim as Julio Torres, mayor of San Dionisio, a town about 70 miles (116 kilometers) southeast of the capital. It said the body was found Thursday, a day after he was reported missing.

Authorities are not speculating on who might be responsible. The area is controlled by gangs and has seen other killings.

Torres was serving his sixth three-year term as mayor. His party, Arena, lamented his slaying through its official Twitter account, and the National Assembly held a moment of silence.

Last year, El Salvador had the world's highest homicide rate for a country not at war.
