ISTANBUL – A Turkish newspaper says prosecutors are seeking life prison terms for two of its journalists who have been jailed on terror and espionage charges for their reports on alleged government arms smuggling to Syria.
Cumhuriyet newspaper says Wednesday an Istanbul prosecutor has completed an indictment against editor-in-chief, Can Dundar, and the paper's Ankara representative, Erdem Gul. The indictment needs to be accepted by a court before a trial can begin.
In May, Cumhuriyet published what it said were images of Turkish trucks carrying ammunition to Syrian militants. The paper said the images proved that Turkey was smuggling arms to rebels — a claim the government rejects.
The journalists were investigated after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he would not let Dundar get away with it and filed a criminal complaint.
