Year after deaths of 19 Arizona firefighters, communities, families find ways to move forward

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – In the year since 19 Arizona firefighters died, the community has mourned and honored the men while moving forward.

Reminders of the Granite Mountain Hotshots are spread throughout the crew's former station in Prescott.

Their pictures surround a quilt hanging on the wall. Their names are inscribed on a wooden table. And the vehicles they drove to their final wildfire on June 30, 2013 are parked in the garage, with slips of paper marking their seat assignments.

Darrell Willis is chief of the Prescott Fire Department's Wildland Division. He says the mementos at Station 7 allow the community to pay tribute to the men who will never be forgotten.

The Hotshots died after becoming trapped in a brush-choked canyon. It was the deadliest day for U.S. fire crews since 9/11.
