District of Columbia police say they are investigating any possible connection between a knife-wielding woman who was shot by an officer and a fire that initially brought officers to the scene.

Police say the woman remained hospitalized Sunday after the shooting early Saturday evening. Police did not provide an update on her condition. Her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Police say the woman refused commands to drop a knife and approached the officer before she was shot. That account was confirmed by witnesses who spoke to The Washington Post. Bystanders captured the shooting on video.

Police were called to the scene to help firefighters with a burning home. A police spokesman said Sunday that investigators were looking into any connection between the woman and the fire.
