A Lansing-area woman has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the 2013 death of her newborn daughter who was found face-down in a wastebasket with umbilical cord and placenta still attached.

The Lansing State Journal and WILX-TV report that 26-year-old Melissa Mitin of Okemos took the plea deal Friday. She faces at least 27½ years in prison when sentenced April 13.

Defense attorney Frank Reynolds said a possible plea had been under discussion for weeks.

Authorities also were investigating the 2014 disappearance of Mitin's baby boy who is presumed dead. Prosecutors have said the boy was born while Mitin was free on bond after being charged in her daughter's death.

The newspaper reports that, as part of Friday's plea, Mitin will not be charged in her son's disappearance.
