The wife of a man who authorities say faked his own death to defraud insurance companies out of millions appeared briefly in court on counts of insurance fraud.

Daphne Simpson did not enter a plea Tuesday. She was appointed a public defender because her bank accounts and other sources of income will be unavailable to her due to the nature of the charges.

Simpson was briefly free after her arrest on Saturday but is now being held in Jacksonville's jail. She is scheduled back in court April 15.

According to authorities and insurance companies, Simpson's husband, Jose Lantigua, faked his own death in Venezuela in 2013 so the family could claim millions in life insurance payments.

Lantigua was arrested Saturday in North Carolina after getting caught applying for a passport in another man's name.
