The city of Orlando plans to erect a new fence with commemorative art around the Pulse nightclub.

Officials said Tuesday the new fence will be installed next week around the gay nightclub where the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history took place in June.

Works by local artists will be hung around the fence and will honor the memories of the 49 patrons who were massacred, as well as the 53 others who needed hospitalization.

Gunman Omar Mateen was killed by police SWAT team members during a rescue of hostages in the nightclub after a standoff.

City officials say the new fence reflects how the nightclub has become a well-trafficked makeshift memorial. The new fence will be smaller, allowing more room to navigate by foot.
