CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech's president is scheduled to testify at a wrongful death trial about his actions nearly five years ago when a student gunman killed 32 on the university's Blacksburg campus and then himself.
Charles Steger is not named in the civil suit but the parents of two Tech students want to hear his accounting Friday of what he and other university officials did on April 16, 2007, when the most deadly shooting in modern U.S. history occurred on his campus.
The lawsuit claims university officials were slow to respond to the first two shootings on campus, then attempted to cover up their missteps.
The state is the lone defendant in the trial, which is being heard in Blacksburg. Attorneys for the state have defended the university's actions on that day.
