Washington County sheriff's deputies say they found a dog shot with an arrow on Old Highway 91 near the Arizona line, the third animal  shot by an arrow or blow dart in the county this year.

Sgt. Kurt Bowen initially thought the pit bull he found Friday was shot with a bullet but later determined it was an arrow.

He immediately contacted the Ivins City Animal Shelter and started bandaging the open stomach wound.

Shelter Director Agnes Smith told The (St. George) Spectrum the animal underwent three hours of surgery and is improving but still "not out of the woods."

She credited Sgt. Bowen with saving the life of the dog, which they've nicknamed "Sarge."

A kitten shot with blow darts died in February.  Another cat that survived an arrow attack in February has been nicknamed, "Quiver."
