SALT LAKE CITY – A 10-year-old boy who survived a night alone in the remote eastern Utah backcountry says he remembered the skills his father taught him and curled up between rocks still warm from the sun to survive the cold mountain night.
Malachi Bradley said Tuesday that he was determined to get back to his family after he got lost while searching for wild mushrooms during a hike with family about 200 miles east of Salt Lake City.
When he heard a search helicopter overhead, he found a clearing and waited. He was spotted about 5 miles from the mountain lake where he disappeared.
Mother Molly Chrisman says her son drank river water and tried to fashion a spear to catch a fish.
Malachi says he'll go camping again, but he'll stay close next time.
