BLUE POINT, N.Y. – A branch of an order of Roman Catholic nuns is putting its longtime U.S. headquarters on Long Island up for sale as its membership declines.
Newsday reports (http://nwsdy.li/2qv2E2h ) the Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk are selling their longtime headquarters in the Suffolk County hamlet of Blue Point, on Great South Bay.
The nuns say the eight-acre property, known as the St. Ursula Center, has to be sold to pay for living costs and health care for the last of the order's 40 aging members.
The order says it will continue to operate in the U.S. despite the impending sale. Some local residents hope to convert the South Shore property it into a public library.
The Ursulines have been in Blue Point since 1935. Their branch traces its founding to Tildonk, Belgium, on April 30, 1818.
