KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Faculty at the University of Tennessee are pledging support for leaders who have come under fire after an online memo advised employees to make sure holiday celebrations aren't Christmas parties "in disguise."
The memo "Best Practices for Inclusive Holiday Celebrations in the Workplace" was posted on the school's website by its Office for Diversity and Inclusion. It says parties should celebrate workplace relationships with no emphasis on religion or culture.
The memo led some lawmakers to call on Chancellor Jimmy Cheek to resign. Cheek says the memo contains suggestions, not policies.
The Knoxville News Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1NBqRMv) reports that the Faculty Senate said in a statement Sunday that it supports Cheek's efforts to make the school more inclusive. The statement says the group will meet Tuesday to draft a resolution to send to UT President Joe DePietro.
