A tsunami warning has been issued for parts of Alaska's Aleutian Island chain after a powerful earthquake.

The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude-7.1 quake was recorded at 12:53 p.m. local time Monday afternoon. It was centered about 13 miles southeast of Little Sitkin Island.

The National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, issued a tsunami warning for the coastal areas of Alaska. It stretches from Nikolski to Attu.

The center also issued a tsunami advisory for coastal areas from Nikolski to Unimak Pass.
