Opening statements are scheduled to begin in the trial of a man accused of killing eight people at a nursing home in central North Carolina in 2009.

Robert Stewart, who goes on trial Monday in Carthage, is charged with murder in the killings at the nursing home where his estranged wife worked. Seven nursing home patients and a nurse were killed.

It took nearly two weeks to select 12 jurors and four alternates. Jury selection took place in nearby Stanly County because of the publicity about the case.

Stewart's lawyers plan a defense based on claims of limited mental capacity at the time of the shootings.
