A judge in Ohio has scheduled the murder trial of a former University of Cincinnati police officer who fatally shot a motorist after a traffic stop.

Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Megan Shanahan set Oct. 24 for the trial of Ray Tensing. A pretrial hearing was scheduled for April 6.

Tensing was not in court Thursday. His attorney has said Tensing feared being dragged under the car as motorist Samuel DuBose tried to drive away July 19. Attorney Stewart Mathews also has requested that the trial be moved out of Hamilton County.

The university fired Tensing and restructured its public safety leadership. UC and DuBose's family reached a $5.3 million settlement.

The shooting came amid increased attention nationally to how police treat blacks. Tensing is white. DuBose was black.
