Authorities say a tree split in half and fell on a New Jersey woman after a night of heavy rain, killing her.

New Milford police Detective Lt. Brian Long tells The Record (http://bit.ly/1JwTnOB ) that the Norwood maple tree split in half Wednesday morning and struck 21-year-old Michelle Mian. He says police believe Mian was walking to her car at the time.

Long says the tree was likely damaged during overnight storms.

He says a family member found the woman lying on the ground underneath branches and called police.

Mian was pronounced dead at the Holy Name Medical Center, where she worked as a student intern.
