The Latest on an hours-long standoff in Newport Beach, California (all times local):

8:15 a.m.

Authorities in Southern California are calling off the search for a driver who, with a woman and two children in his SUV, led police on a chase and ensuing hours-long standoff.

Newport Beach police Sgt. Rachel Johnson says the victims are safe, but the suspect remains at large.

The chase started around 5 p.m. Monday in Orange County. A couple of hours later, the driver parked his SUV on the side of the road and the standoff started.

The man and children got out of the SUV several times and the driver could be seen speaking on a cellphone every so often. Police wouldn't say how the driver was related to the victims.

The Orange County Register says the man ran off about 10 p.m. and was never found.
