The Latest on the killing of a Mississippi police officer (all times local):

12:40 p.m.

Less than hour before a Mississippi police officer was shot to death, he helped a driver who had wrecked after falling asleep at the wheel.

The driver, 22-year-old Damon Corrigan, tells the Sun Herald that he crashed Sunday night on the bridge over Biloxi Bay. He says the left side of his Ford Mustang was destroyed, and Biloxi police Patrolman Robert McKeithen (muh-KEETH-en) helped him get out of the car. Corrigan also says McKeithen accompanied him to a hospital.

Biloxi police records show McKeithen responded to the crash and returned to the police station because he had gotten a flat tire. McKeithen was shot to death outside the station.

One man is charged with capital murder and three are charged with accessory after the fact in the killing.
