The grandfather of a toddler badly hurt after an ambulance crash says the family is devastated.
Gary Oakes of Wise, Virginia, said in a brief phone interview Monday that his 3-year-old grandson had been under medical care before the crash that happened early Sunday but didn't want to elaborate on what he was being treated for. Asked how the family was coping, Oakes said: "It's devastating."
Police say that the boy was being taken to a hospital in stable condition early Sunday when a drunken driver hit the car. Authorities say the boy is now in critical condition.
The driver has been charged with driving while intoxicated.

Authorities say a young boy is fighting for his life a day after an ambulance carrying him overturned when it was hit by a drunken driver in North Carolina.
Winston-Salem Police Lt. Rick Newnum said the boy remains in critical condition Monday. Newnum described the boy as a toddler or infant.
The boy was on his way to a Winston-Salem hospital early Sunday when the crash occurred. It's not clear what had happened to the boy but Newnum said he was in stable condition before the crash. He emerged with life-threatening injuries after the ambulance rolled over onto its side.
Police say the mother was aboard and had minor injuries.
The driver of the car that hit the ambulance faces charges including driving while intoxicated.
