LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The Latest on a police helicopter crash northeast of Atlanta (all times local):

1 p.m.

A spokeswoman with the Federal Aviation Administration says its personnel are heading to the scene of a police helicopter crash near Atlanta to investigate.

Gwinnett County police said two of its officers on board were injured in Friday's crash, and both were alert and talking afterward.

FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said the MD 369 helicopter went down about 11 a.m. Friday.

Police say the chopper, one of two helicopters operated by the department, was returning from a call when it went down at a general aviation airport during windy weather as a storm approached.

Police say the county's fire department helped free one of the occupants, who was trapped inside. Both occupants were taken to a hospital.

The crash happened at Briscoe Field in Lawrenceville, where the police department's helicopters are based.

A police department near Atlanta says one of its helicopters was returning from a call when the chopper went down at an airport during windy weather as a storm approached, injuring the two officers on board.

Gwinnett County police said in a brief statement that both occupants were alert and talking after the crash late Friday morning, and were taken to a local hospital.

The county's fire department helped free one of the occupants, who was trapped inside, police said.

The crash happened at Briscoe Field, a general aviation airport the helicopter uses.

Police said the cause was not yet known.

Police say one of their helicopters has "gone down" at an airport outside Atlanta, and two officers on board have been taken to a hospital.

Gwinnett County police said in a brief statement Friday morning that its Air 1 went down at Briscoe Field, a general aviation airport in Lawrenceville, northeast of Atlanta.

Gwinnett County police Detective David Smith says the extent of the officers' injuries is not known.

Few other details were immediately available.
