A Texas teacher’s note to parents has some students breathing a big sigh of relief as the school year begins.
KXAS-TV reported Monday that Brandy Young’s note to the parents of her second grade’s class at Godley Elementary School in Johnson County about her homework policy has gone viral.
Young passed her note to parents at the school’s “Meet the Teacher Night” and explained her policy, according to KTRK-TV.
The message read:
“Dear Parents,
“After much research this summer, I am trying something new. Homework will only consist of work that your student did not finish during the school day. There will be no formally assigned homework this year.
“Research has been unable to prove that homework improves student performance. Rather, I ask that you spend your evenings doing things that are proven to correlate with student success. Eat dinner as a family, read together, play outside, and get your child to bed early.”
Young’s policy has received a lot of praise.
Samantha Gallagher, a parent of one of the girl’s in Young’s class, told KTRK-TV that she was so pleased with the new policy that she posted the letter on Facebook.
"I am very grateful Brooke has an innovative teacher who is willing to adopt new policies for the benefit of her students and their families," Gallagher added.
