SAN ANTONIO – A Texas man was in an intensive care unit Sunday after being doused with gasoline and set on fire.
Richard Rodriguez, 22, said he was attacked by several men near a San Antonio apartment complex around 11:20pm Saturday, the San Antonio Express-News reported. He was unable to give police an exact number of assailants.
The men poured gasoline on him and ignited it. He suffered burns, particularly to the lower half of his body, according to Lt. Matthew Podwika of the San Antonio Police Department. The exact extent of his injuries was not known.
A police officer patrolling the area saw the flames and rushed to put them out with a fire extinguisher just minutes after the attack occurred.
Rodriguez was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center in poor but stable condition. He remained in intensive care Sunday.
The motive for the attack was not immediately known. Police were searching for witnesses Sunday.
