Texas has executed a Houston man for fatally shooting his 19-month-old son after a 2002 standoff with police.

Timothy Wayne Adams declined to make a final statement Tuesday before receiving a lethal injection for the slaying of Timothy Jr. The toddler was shot twice by his father at close range inside the family's apartment.

The 42-year-old Adams' execution took place about 35 minutes after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a final appeal from his attorneys.

He was the second Texas prisoner put to death this year in the nation's busiest death penalty state.

Prosecutors had said his son's slaying was retaliation for the child's mother leaving Adams.

The toddler's mother, Emma Adams, quietly sobbed during the execution. She and her family declined to speak with reporters afterward.
