Eufaula officials are dropping their legal battle against the state's plan to widen a highway to four lanes through the town's historic district, which was featured in the movie "Sweet Home Alabama."

The Eufaula City Council held a special meeting Friday and decided not to file suit in state court. The council scheduled the meeting after suing in federal court and losing.

U.S. 431 is four lanes from Opelika to the Florida line except for a 0.8-mile stretch through the Eufaula historic district. That stretch is at is known as North Eufaula Avenue, and it is lined with Southern mansions. Doug Purcell of the Save North Eufaula Avenue Coalition says he knows of no other challenges, and the Department of Transportation can begin work next week.
