WOONSOCKET, R.I. -- The Rhode Island State Police bomb squad has destroyed what was called a suspicious package found in the vicinity of a Woonsocket business that President Obama is scheduled to visit later in the day.

Capt. Darren Delaney told The Providence Journal the item was discovered at about 11 a.m. Monday on Century Drive and destroyed shortly before noon. There was no immediate word on what the package might have been. Delaney did not immediately return messages from The Associated Press.

Obama was scheduled to make a late afternoon tour the American Cord & Webbing factory on Century Drive.

Television reports said portions of some roads were closed off during the investigation.
