A suspect has been arrested on suspicion of shooting and wounding two Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies during a series of gunbattles.

Sheriff Jim McDonnell said early Friday that the suspect was arrested after holding a hostage in a structure behind a home. McDonnell says the two deputies are in critical but stable condition.

The sheriff's department says deputies at a DUI checkpoint tried to stop a vehicle Thursday night in the suburban Los Angeles city of Bellflower.

A motorcycle deputy was following the vehicle when the driver stopped, got out and fired. The deputy was hit but shot back.

The driver ran away and fired at other deputies, striking one. The motorist fired at a third group of deputies, who returned fire, but the suspect got away.
