A lawsuit says a disbarred attorney convicted of killing his illegally adopted daughter in a 1987 case that riveted New York City still owes millions of dollars he was ordered to pay her birth mother a decade ago.

The mother's lawyer sued Joel Steinberg on Tuesday, seeking to renew the $15 million judgment in her a wrongful-death suit. It's a step toward trying to collect.

In 2007, a new trial was ordered on one aspect of the civil case, tied to one-third of the judgment. The retrial hasn't happened. It's unclear why.

Steinberg was convicted of manslaughter in the beating of his 6-year-old daughter, Lisa. He was released from prison in 2004.

He hasn't answered an email sent Tuesday seeking comment. No working phone number for him can be found.
