ALEXANDRIA, Va. – A U.S. official says federal prosecutors want to call a New York Times reporter as a witness in a national security leak case, but will seek only limited information and will not require him to identify his source.
Prosecutors were appearing Tuesday before a federal judge in Virginia to explain what role journalist James Risen will play in their case against Jeffrey Sterling, a former CIA officer accused of disclosing government secrets.
The official was not authorized to discuss by name the prosecutors' plans ahead of the court hearing and spoke on condition of anonymity.
The official says prosecutors want to ask Risen questions he has previously answered in a sworn affidavit, including confirming that he has written a book.
