Embattled cell phone handset maker Sony Ericsson is closing its North American headquarters in North Carolina in a global effort that will cut all 425 positions from that location and 2,000 jobs worldwide.
The company told employees about the closing of the headquarters in Research Triangle Park at Wednesday's morning meeting, The News & Observer of Raleigh said. The offices will be shut down in the coming months.
The closure is part of a company strategy to cut its worldwide staff of 10,000 by 20 percent.
Spokeswoman Stacy Dorster says the joint venture between Sweden's LM Ericsson and Japan's Sony Corp. is shuttering several sites around the world to consolidate research and development.
The 8-year-old company has 425 workers left at its North American headquarters — about half its recent workforce — after shedding hundreds of jobs in the past year.
The site handles customer service and support, research and development, sales and finance.
