WASHINGTON – The Senate is on track to approve a massive defense policy bill that endorses President Barack Obama's growing military campaign, including air strikes, against Islamic State militants.
A vote was expected late Friday afternoon on the measure that also authorizes funds for basic military operations, including ships, aircraft, weapons and a 1 percent pay raise for the troops.
The bill would authorize the training and equipping of moderate Syrian rebels battling the Islamic State, a mandate that lasts for two years. It also would provide $5 billion to train Iraqis to counter the extremists who brutally rule large sections of Iraq and Syria.
Once passed, the Senate would send the $585 billion measure to Obama for his signature.
