SEATTLE – A Seattle attorney representing a jailed vigilante leader in Mexico says she will be transferred to another prison facility in Mexico City where she'll have better access to medical attention, her family and her defense team.
Thomas Antkowiak says he expects Nestora Salgado to be moved in coming days. He says a Mexican state court approved the transfer Wednesday.
The 41-year-old resident of the Seattle suburb of Renton is being held at a federal prison in the state of Nayarit. She holds dual U.S. and Mexican citizenship.
Salgado was arrested in August 2013 after people detained by the community self-defense force that she led in the southern state of Guerrero alleged they had been kidnapped. A federal judge cleared Salgado of those charges but related state charges have kept her locked up.
