RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. - The Coast Guard on Friday announced it had called off its search for a Canadian woman who is believed to have fallen overboard from a cruise ship while en route from the Bahamas to Florida.
The search was officially suspended Thursday night after crews combed an area of 7,296 square miles between the Bahamas and Palm Beach County, Fla., over an 84-hour period.
The 47-year-old Canadian woman, whose name was not released, was first reported missing from the Celebration Cruise Line ship Wednesday morning by her boyfriend.
The man said he last saw his girlfriend at the cruise ship's gift shop at 1:00am Wednesday, where he left her to go to the casino before later retiring to their cabin. He said he awoke to find she had not returned.
The US coast guard, FBI, Florida Air National Guard, Royal Bahamas Police Force and Bahamian Air and Sea Rescue Association all contributed to the search.
"(Incidents) like these are very unfortunate," Charles Kinnear, president of the Celebration Cruise Line, told The Palm Beach Post. "We're still hoping for the best."
No arrests were made over the woman's disappearance.
