A Rhode Island man has received two consecutive life sentences for killing his parents and burying their bodies in the couple's backyard cesspool.

James Soares Jr. was sentenced Wednesday in Providence Superior Court for the July 2008 murders. He received the maximum possible punishment under the terms of his plea agreement.

He pleaded guilty in April to killing his parents, James and Marian Soares, stashing their bodies in the cesspool behind their Warren home and then using the couple's credit cards for a shopping spree.

The couple was reported missing after failing to attend a family reunion. Prosecutors say Soares repeatedly lied about his parents' whereabouts before confessing to the murders.
