GENESEO, N.Y. – A restored World War II transport plane that dropped U.S. paratroopers on Normandy 70 years ago has returned home to its western New York airfield.
Hundreds of people turned out Saturday in Geneseo to give the crew of the C-47 known as "Whiskey 7" a hero's welcome.
Whiskey 7 is the only plane still flying which actually participated in the D-Day invasion at Normandy on June 6, 1944. Eight days ago, the plane took part in a D-Day 70th anniversary re-enactment in northern France that included 1,000 paratroopers.
Whiskey 7 returned home on Flag Day, nearly a month after it departed from the airfield at the National Warplane Museum in Geneseo, 25 miles south of Rochester. Museum volunteers spent years restoring the plane after it was donated by a New York businessman.
