Indiana authorities resumed their search Thursday for a 17-month-old boy who disappeared when a kayak overturned in the Whitewater River, Fox 19 reports.
The boy, whose name hasn't been released, was in the kayak with his mother, 34-year-old Carmen Sickmeier, and her boyfriend, 33-year-old Larry J. O'Bannion, when it capsized at around 3 p.m. Wednesday, according to the station.
The boy was reportedly wearing a life jacket that wasn't properly fastened when the kayak hit fast-moving water.
Authorities describe the site in Franklin County -- about 70 miles from Indianapolis and near the Ohio state line -- as a "dangerous stretch of water."
"This river is way underestimated by the tourists that visit," Franklin County Sheriff Ken Murphy said.
Crews from Franklin County, the Indiana State Police, and the New Trenton Fire Department are all assisting with the rescue operation Thursday.
The Indianapolis Star reports that the boy's mother and boyfriend are from Florence, Ky.
