Fire officials say a woman has been seriously injured after falling and becoming trapped in a manhole near downtown Baltimore.

Baltimore Fire Department spokesman Samuel Johnson told local media outlets that the unidentified woman fell 10 feet in the manhole and had to be rescued by firefighters. The reports say the woman was hospitalized in serious condition and that a firefighter injured in the rescue also had been treated a hospital for unspecified injuries.

Authorities haven't released any further details of the circumstances of the fall or whether the manhole cover was off at the time.
