ANDERSON, Ind. – An Indiana prosecutor is questioning why no one followed up on the case of a 15-year-old girl who was found covered in feces and weighing less than 40 pounds.
WRTV-TV reports records show the girl showed signs of malnutrition as far back as 2010. Child services workers were notified, but the case was dismissed two months later.
Madison County Prosecutor Rodney Cummings said Wednesday there was no apparent follow-up after the case was closed.
A Department of Child Services spokesman declined to comment on specifics of the case.
The girl is in critical condition at Peyton Manning Children's Hospital in Indianapolis. Her grandfather and his wife were in custody on preliminary charges of neglect of a dependent.
The Associated Press is not naming the couple to protect the girl's identity.
