JACKSON, Miss. – The Confederate battle emblem on the Mississippi flag is a vestige of slavery, and Congress should erase it. That's the message protesters say they plan to deliver Tuesday during rally outside the U.S. Capitol.
Actress Aunjanue (AHN-jzhe-new) Ellis, who lives in Mississippi, is among the speakers for the Flag Day event. She says the Mississippi banner is a national issue because Americans shouldn't spend tax dollars on a symbol tied to slavery and the Ku Klux Klan.
Mississippi is the only state with a flag that still includes the Confederate battle emblem. The symbol has been there since 1894, and voters chose to keep it in 2001.
Confederate images have come under fresh scrutiny in the past year, since the massacre of nine black worshippers at a church in Charleston, South Carolina.
