BERKELEY, Calif. – An investigation into the misuse of funds by an outgoing chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley cost 10 times more than the misspending.
UC spokesman Ricardo Vazquez told The Associated Press on Wednesday that UC spent $57,671 on the probe.
The investigation found that Chancellor Nicholas Dirks used university resources for part of a gym membership, personal training sessions and an elliptical machine. The services and equipment cost roughly $5,000.
Vazquez said the aim was to conduct a fair and thorough investigation.
Dirks is stepping down on June 30. He has not commented on the spending, but UC spokeswoman Dianne Klein has said he has apologized and repaid the money.
The cost of the probe was first reported by the Daily Californian campus newspaper.
