ST. LOUIS – The pathologist who performed a private autopsy on Vonderrit Myers Jr. says the 18-year-old was shot several times from behind in his fatal confrontation with a St. Louis police officer on Oct. 8.
Pathologist Dr. Cyril Wecht performed the private autopsy at the request of Myers' family and outlined his findings at a news conference Thursday. Attorneys for the family say the findings suggest that Myers was running away from the officer.
A message seeking comment from police was not immediately returned.
Wecht says Myers was struck eight times and six of the wounds were to the back side of his body. The fatal wound was to the side of the head.
Police have said Myers shot first at the officer. Wecht says the autopsy found gunpowder residue on Myers.
