A pregnant Alabama woman who was jailed to keep her from using heroin is asking a judge to allow her release on bail.

A Jefferson County judge scheduled a hearing Thursday afternoon to consider the request by 21-year-old Alexandra Laird of Pleasant Grove.

Laird was indicted earlier this year after a daughter was born addicted to heroin. She's now pregnant again, and al.com (http://bit.ly/2ddYJ8K ) reports Laird was arrested earlier this month after authorities say she admitted using heroin regularly while pregnant.

Laird's lawyer is asking a judge to approve bail, but prosecutors oppose the request. Authorities say she needs to remain in custody to keep her away from heroin.

Laird is asking to go into a treatment program where she could take medication to protect the fetus from opioid addiction.
