Police say an officer has fatally shot an assault suspect who stepped out of a Dallas-area motel room and reached for a gun in his waistband.

Carrollton police say no officers were hurt in Wednesday's incident.

Spokeswoman Jolene DeVito says a woman Tuesday night went to a police station to stay she was sexually assaulted and escaped from the suspect's motel room.  Officers determined the same suspect had a warrant pending for a recent family violence assault that left another woman hurt.

Police staked out the motel until a different woman came out Wednesday, unaware that officers were outside. She wasn't injured.

DeVito says the suspect was shot once when he emerged and reached for his gun.

The officer who opened fired goes on paid administrative leave amid the investigation.
