Investigators in West Virginia say a gunshot wound suffered by a suspect during a weekend chase appears to be self-inflicted.

West Virginia State Police told media outlets that 25-year-old James Hicks III of Athens fired six rounds inside the pickup truck he was driving. Five rounds went through the vehicle's roof. Investigators believe Hicks was struck by the sixth round.

The chase occurred Saturday night after Princeton police attempted to make a traffic stop because the truck's registration was expired.

State police say a passenger jumped out during the chase.

The truck stopped at a grocery store in Glenwood. State police say the officer got out of his vehicle and the suspect then fired a gun inside the truck. The officer fired three rounds at the truck but none of the shots hit Hicks.
